| Glad to see a bit of Dick Cavett in there, which has me hoping that they found footage of a Dick Cavett show appearance devoted to Gwen in which she did excerpts of most of her shows' characters, including a memorable bit from "Can-Can" where she plays Eve from the Garden of Eden after she's taken a bite from the Apple. Incredibly sexy and funny dancing, and her acting and characterizations were so specific and dazzling. While her singing voice declined over the years (probably from smoking) from what was a strong belt in "Damn Yankees", her brilliant acting and phrasing shone through in her subsequent recordings. I had found the " 'erbie Fitch's Twitch" from "Redhead" a few years ago, and it's one of Fosse's best numbers ever for Gwen, but this trailer looks like it found a print of it in color. This film looks like it's going to be a must-see for musical enthusiasts everywhere. Interestingly, while Gwen was starring in "Chicago" and that show was overshadowed in awards that year by "A Chorus Line", Gwen is also mentioned in the latter show. One of the auditioning dancers says at one point, "I want to be the next Gwen Verdon". Couldn't happen -- she was so singular. Oh, here's " 'Erbie Fitch's Twitch" for you to enjoy in the meanwhile. |
