Agatha Christie’s 1953 courtroom drama WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION is being performed in London’s County Hall. The hall is situated right behind the London Eye and tourist ground zero. It’s billed as an immersive production with some audience members serving as jurors but it’s interactive moments are blessedly few. What Lucy Bailey’s production does deliver to tourists is good theater. Christie’s play is preformed simply but with a strong cast. And under Bailey’s shrewd direction, Christie’s entertainment begins to reveal a sleight of hand that is fiendishly clever, predicated as it is on the audience’s prejudices, both historical and contemporary. When the play ends, Christie’s magic trick begins to unravel in the daylight but the games it has played with our first impressions continue to resonate. The play and the production reveal Christie’s great skills as a dramatist but also her deeply wry take on the human condition.
