I think her won was very much expected. No one blamed her for the show's problems, and although one or two critics were not in love with her performance, she was generally considered to have given a triumphant performance that was the reason to see the show, if there was one. Loudon got great reviews but her show ran only four performances. While it's true that just three years before, Zoe Caldwell won a featured or supporting Tony for a show that ran seven performances, even though she had strong competition, it always helps if your show is still running, or at least had a decent run. And in just those three years, things had perhaps started to change a bit at the Tonys (not that people didn't continue to win Tonys for closed shows, and sometimes shows that had closed won best play).

O'Hara generally got nice enough reviews, but it's the guy's show. And Marge's. The role is a bit thankless.

In the Variety Poll of New York Drama Critics, Maria Karnilova tied with Lansbury. They each got six votes, Loudon got four, O'Hara got one, and there were two abstentions. But Lansbury's role was much more dominating. It's a tour-de-force role. Karnilova's role was arguably a supporting role, and in the Variety poll, she did get one vote in supporting. And later Lila Kedrova won her Tony for the same role in featured. Btw, in a fascinating interview that can be found on youtube, Karnilova said it was her favorite role.

Making sure you're using the right terms for the featured and/or supporting awards for each particular year of the Tonys is a pain in the ass.
