| As much as I love Angela Lansbury and actually liked most of DEAR WORLD, I had a problem with her performance. For me, there was something of a disconnect between how she played scenes as an eccentric character and then sang more straightforwardly. Maria Karnilova gave one of my all-time favorite performances in ZORBÀ, both hilarious and heartbreaking. I may have been responsible for Maria's tying Angela in the Variety Poll. Right after the Tony Awards, Newsday critic George Oppenheimer wrong a column on how he felt Dorothy Loudon deserved the award. I was just a kid. But I wrote him explaining how Dorothy Loudon was very funny, but it was Maria whose performance was so multifaceted and breathtaking. George voted for Maria in the Variety Poll. - Michael Colby |
