Thanks, as always, Alan, for this information about Hiram Sherman. You can read a lot about him in one of John Houseman's three autobiographies, as it was Houseman who talked "Chubby" into playing Shakespeare for the first time, which then became the joy of Sherman's life to perform. He worked consistently at Stratford, CT when Houseman was running the place.

Also, your point about Martin Balsam having left "You Know I Can't Hear You" is interesting, as it was explained to me a long time ago by a Tony voter, that Balsam's win over Albert Finney for "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg" (a performance that you would consider would have been the likely choice), was due to disappointment over Finney's only agreeing to come to NY and play the role for a limited engagement of about ten weeks (Donal Donnelley came in to replace). Funny how big stars come in all the time now for short engagements which enable the producers to earn back a show's costs, win a Tony, but then close, with no replacements even considered (I'm thinking of the sold out run of "Fences" with Denzel a few years back).

Balsam, an American actor (and a trouper), one who had paid his dues, took home the Best Actor award in what I would imagine was a surprise that night. It certainly was to Balsam, if you watch his acceptance speech.
