I remember reading that in order to actually win an award at the Tonies
you needed to indicate that you would be there to accept. (the thinking was that actual presence demonstrated a genuine commitment to the theatre,
whereas movie stars were off filming during the time of Oscar presentations)
this held true till the early '70s (at least)
