Different times. Twenty years before that, Angela Lansbury played the mother of Elvis and Lawrence Harvey when she was in her 30s. Ask any actor in his 60s if he likes being considered viable for a 90 year-old character, especially in a play in which he or she is age appropriate for another role. Plus, seeing 64 year-olds for 80+ characters denies older actors access and opportunity.
One of the great joys of watching Jackson is realizing she's in command of her powers at her age. Pushing geriatric roles on women in their 60s does them no favor. Once upon a time, every woman over 40 was a mother. It's really not just about whether someone once played a role well. In 2018, we can cast older characters with brilliant actors over 75. Who should be entitled to work, and sought. We don't need to age boomers to play roles their parents age. |
