I can also see a middle ground, where Kazee might have found a way to stay with the show if he wanted to, and/or felt that he was wanted. It also could be that Kazee is making a choice purely out of personal reasons, and that dovetails nicely with a desire from the producers to have someone who better fits the role take over.

Things can and do get complicated on all sides in these ways.
