| Boys in the Band - wow, what a star-studded cast. Perfect comic timing & line delivery. The mannerisms are all down pat. They're having such a fun time with the gifts, the dancing, the drinks, etc, before the cattiness comes in later. Loved the little dance 4 of them did up front before the "straight" visitor walked in. The telephone game of who do you really love revealed some real truths especially towards the end. And for those who like "eye candy" - you'll see one guy in his tighty whities and shirtless, and also full rear nudity briefly (look in the upper left corner of the bi-level set). Impeccable cast; as perfect as you can get. This will certainly be a hard ticket once reviews come out. For those wondering - they are extremely strict (at least in the orchestra) with the "no late seating and no returning to your seat" policy, but I believe as an accommodation those affected will be permitted to stand in the rear for the remainder of the show. Runs 1 hour 57 minutes no intermission and the time really flies by. Everyone at the theater was super-nice from the 2 female box office attendants to the security to the ushers to the people downstairs. Unexpected Joy - The York is on a roll here! The video on their site doesn't do the show justice at all. From the video, I thought it would be a lame show and really corny. But it was tons of fun, heart-warming and had so many double entendres (like "I can't wait forever" said by the bride-to-be to the daughter) that I was laughing like crazy. Do listen to "When Will I have My Own" on the York website. Wow, that is a really beautiful ballad. It's the third song from the end and sung by the granddaughter. Such a beautiful voice and I have a feeling we'll hear a lot more from her soon. I could totally listen to this song over & over again. Would like to hear a dance remix of it too. Each character is so well acted with their different personalities (hippy grandmother, conservative mother, sassy bride-to-be, and rebellious teen). 1 hour 50 minutes no intermission. Box office attendant was super friendly and of course, it's always a treat to hear Jim Morgan's speech. He truly loves theater and it shows. A real warm-hearted guy and we're lucky to have him. Hopefully this show will win awards next year (it was too late for this year's awards, per Jim Morgan). Summer and Smoke - Unfortunately, this one really left me cold. Had a few moments of passion (like the kiss at the end of the first act). But overall it was a huge bore and I felt the leading lady was just playing the same overacted "manic, crazy mad" mannerisms over and over and over again. 2 hours 40 minutes but felt significantly longer. Would have been tolerable at 90 minutes, but it became a real chore & bore to sit through at this extended length. As an aside, I was shocked at how hyper the house manager was "2 minutes till curtain, 1 minute till curtain, etc". Never saw that kind of behavior from a house manager before and was really taken aback. |
