My experience with Newman bears this out...I had the chance to meet him when he came to see a show I was in (not to see ME, but rather one of the starry names in the cast). He was hanging around the stage door with the person he came to see as I was exiting. I stopped for a moment to say goodnight to the person he was chatting with and he said "Good job!" I hadn't noticed who the small man was talking to my castmate, but once I looked and saw the blue eyes, there was no mistaking him for anyone else. I've never seen eyes that blue before or since. And I think my response was a less-than-calm-cool-and-collected "Oh, wow! Paul Newman! Thanks!" He was kind enough to include me in the conversation for a few minutes and I excused myself at an appropriate moment.
He couldn't have been nicer or more charming. But I was neither interrupting him eating, nor asking for a photo or an autograph. |
