I don't think there was any competitive interest; Sondheim Has been on record in various interviews saying that the lyrics for P&B are the best ever heard on Broadway'. I listened to (but did not see) the recent cut down version. It was the Cheryl Crawford musical play, which made sense as the songs were becoming well known But after the Houston Grand opera production, a cut down version made no sense to me; However years after seeing I Michigan Opera production, with friends, one of my friend said she thought it was too long and she would have preferred a a shorter version. This past year, at university of Michigan, there were people leaving after act two, but some of the folks seemed to be from the same bus, so perhaps there were time constraints...My favorite CAROUSEL was the Nat. theater production, on tour starring Patrick Wilson
