Harry Potter's success is not an ex of the Times irrelevance

Shows like Harry Potter and Mean Girls and Frozen are going to succeed regardless of what The Times or any other paper says about them, and they will neither gain relevance or lose it by riding the fan bandwagon and giving fans the review that serves the narrative they already decided as fan or standing against...

But I do think The NYT is relevant for theater criticism... their reviews of shows I'm not already decided on seeing definitely influence whether or not I'm buying a ticket, or where shows are on my priority list. I'm positive I'm not alone on that.

I doubt there was ever a time a theater critic was so powerful it could close a show with a franchise brand and millions of built in fans based solely their review - it's just that back when theatric critics were more powerful, there were no shows with a brand and millions of built in fans.
