The show works best when the take on Horace lines up with the Dolly interpretation.

Not a profound observation, but it's a factor here. Hyde-Pierce is just the perfect foil for the outre Midler. She needed a man capable of matching her in the near-clowning of the Harmonia scenes. He was terrific, and I'm not one of his big fans. I like him, but until this show, I've been neutral on his impact in specific roles. His eccentricity was required to balance Midler. I was reminded that -- unless I'm wrong (will check) -- Richard Deacon played it opposite Phyllis Diller. He didn't stay when Merman came in. The couple must match somehow, or at least the actors' styles.

Peters is one of the most emotionally accessible actors in musical theater. She's comfortable wearing her heart on her sleeve. I thought her Desiree was about the most heartbroken I've ever experienced. So it's no accident that such an underbelly informs her Dolly's first act arc. And she needed a Horace who's grounded, who's a viable romance. Garber is handsome, and -- may I say this? -- has aged as well as Peters. They are, without putting to fine a point on it, sexy separately, sexy as a couple. It gives this new iteration a little oomph.
