When I saw the Broadway revival , the "Sheila' was African American(She was marvelous), and Richie was still a black man/ Richie's story, "imagine me a kindergarten teacher", was based on a black female dancer, but when she left after one of the workshops to go into Fosse's CHICAGO, Bennett had the part re-written for a black man, so if ACL, turned out to be a success, she could NOT come back for replacement/road tour casts. I think I read that in Kevin Kelly's book
