I also wondered if they simply could have removed and/or stopped selling some of the seats, or sold them for vastly reduced prices. Even at the current Met, there are plenty of seats with poor sightlines, or so it appears when viewed from seats with decent sightlines.
One of my favorite moments in the documentary is the old television clip of Humphrey Burton speaking of the "diamond-tiared dowagers" (or a phrase close to that) who would be attending the closing night gala, followed by clips, seemingly from the same old news report or documentary, of two women in line for tickets for either the gala or one of the last performances at the old house. These woman clearly were not diamond-tiarred dowagers, but middle-class or working-class New York women who loved the old Met. And the younger one in particular is scathing about it being torn down, while the older one speaks of having heard Caruso in 1920 and of what great acoustics the house has. I hope I'm remembering this correctly. There is just amazing stuff all through this documentary. |
