| I agree that the level of hype for the biggest hit shows has gotten out of hand, and I guess it goes without saying that this is largely a function of the pervasiveness of mass media and social media in our time. I've been reading Todd S. Purdum's new book on Rodgers & Hammerstein, in which he notes that there was a huge amount of hype and a tremendous demand for tickets for SOUTH PACIFIC. But of course, in comparison to the present day, the hype was limited to a certain extent by the fact that media in those days was far more limited -- even if there were many more newspapers! |
