Vincentelli is ignorant of the entire HP canon except for odd facts here and there, and she expects to take in the eighth part of the series and enjoy it? I guess I can't blame her totally, because the myth is out there that even newbies are welcome. Even Steven Hoggett and John TIffany said as much on Theater Talk a couple of weeks ago.

But it makes sense that even five hours of play time cannot catch everyone up on all the events, characters, relationships, settings, and lore of the seven previous books. Plus, trying to do that would make the play extremely boring for the legions of fans out there.

After seeing Puffs at New World Stages back in January without knowing what the eff was going on, and surrounded by audience members who were clearly enjoying every minute of the show, I knew I wanted to bone up on HP before Cursed Child. I didn't want to waste my hard-earned ticket money. So that's what I did. As a result, I chuckled with delight when Moaning Myrtle and Dumbledore appeared, and I understood the relevance of Neville Longbottom.

Along with hundreds of other references.

Yes, it's not a perfect play. Despite all the action and drama, some of it drags in spots with unnecessary dialogue. And a couple of plot points were far-fetched, even considering the fantasy genre.

But Cursed Child is a worthy addition to the HP canon and a thoroughly enjoyable theater experience.

I think Vincentelli embarrassed herself with that piece, is all.
