Don't know if this footage--"reviewers reels"-- from the original Broadway production (54 minutes worth) has been posted before. I was surprised to find it.

Thank you so much! Reminds me of how I felt seeing it for the first time, and also, why/how much I've loved every revival I've seen since.

Thank you so much for posting that. Brings back memories of the amazing experience of seeing those tremendous performances. After seeing all the subsequent productions and the film, the phenomenal brilliance of this original version faded a bit in my recollections of it - just how fantastic the actors and production were. Watching these clips, I felt like there were numerous bits of text that have been cut since then. Can any experts confirm? And again, Thank you sergius! What a treat!

"Perestroika" has gone through a series of rewrites. Shortly after the Broadway production, Kushner revised it, such that there are two different editions of the published script with the Broadway artwork. Kushner made further changes for the miniseries, and he incorporated some of those rewrites into his larger rewrite of "Perestroika" for the Signature revival. He also did some small work on "Millenium", but that play has remained largely unchanged. All of these rewrites are in the current published editions, with the TCG publication (which was the first to have this text) marked as "Revised and Complete". The easiest way to tell if you're looking at an older version of "Perestroika" is to see if the Angel appears at the end of the Bolshevik's speech at the top of Act 1 - in the current version, she doesn't make an appearance until Act 2.

Meanwhile, am I the only person who isn't hearing the sound properly on these videos? Both on my laptop and my phone, I get a garbled track that is essentially unintelligible.

It's weird - I played it on my TV last night, through the Amazon Fire Stick, and it was totally fine.

It was great to be reminded of how much George Wolfe went for the comedy in that production - it's almost a Neil Simon play in these clips. It was also interesting to see how the performers had relaxed into their roles by the time they got to "Perestroika"; there's a softness present that they hadn't yet found at the start of the run.

Anyone who has read "The World Only Spins Forward" will recognize in the "Millenium" footage the massive fake head of hair that George Wolfe had to literally tear from Marcia Gay Harden's hands before opening night. That's amazing! (Noticeably, in the "Perstroika" footage, Harden is sporting her own hair.)

As a friend of mine likes to say "Previously Owned Hair."
Sergius, thanks for posting!!!
Particularly resonant having seen Spinella as Roy Cohn at Berkeley Rep earlier this month.

I'd think he was kinda perfect for the role.
