I took my time going to see Carousel as it is my favorite R&H and I was so bowled over by the last production, I was hesitant to go again. Well. Word of mouth has been all over the place so I thought that I'd better go and judge it by myself.
One the one hand it is sung beautifully.....and that made the viewing worthwhile.... on the other hand......
I'll just pick out one aspect to make my comment. Should some dance company decide that they'd like to commission a dance version of Carousel using the original music.....I can think of no better choreographer to go to than Justin Peck. His work in this production is superlative. That being said, the quantity and quality of the dance overwhelmed the production. There was little else in the production that stood up to it. Happily much of the singing (especially of the leads) was beautiful........ but I can just as well purchase a recording for that.
Spoiler Alert:
I must credit my friend Steven for this comment....At the opening when we 'see' the carousel I turn to him and say:
That's it?
His response?
Must be a one horse kind of town. |
