Extension for Three Tall Women?
Posted by: Thom915 02:06 pm EDT 05/29/18

Now that Roseanne has been cancelled, might this play extend to Labor Day? I understand that one of the reasons an extension seemed unlikely but she will be free now. Glenda Jackson may not wish to extend even following her expected Tony win. Bringing in a replacement seems a bit counterproductive but if it wins best revival instead of "Angels in America", who knows?

Her height aside, Sally Field would probably be an amazing B.

Honestly, I just want to get her back to the stage again, dangit.

like Glenn Close or Meryl Streep, though thus far I don't think those ladies have ever done a replacement gig. If they want to do a great role, it wouldn't diminish their standing in the industry to do it, but that's sometimes how big stars think. Actually, two-Time Oscar winner Sally Field did a replacement gig in "The Goat" to her great credit. Come on, Barbra! (in our dreams) :)

Miss Stanwyck has been dead for some time (I know, I know different spelling, but surely Missy (as she was affectionately known to her crews and co-workers) would have made a fabulous A--and, as much as I admire Ms. Streisand, I do not see Albee's A as in her wheelhouse). Now, a tall woman I could also imagine would be Ellen Burstyn! My favorite (and only) Burstyn story is when I attended "The Testament of Mary" and I was in line to go onto the set before the show and two middle-aged women ahead of me whispered to each other, "WHo's that? She's somebody!" "She looks like Dorothy McGuire!" Then, before I could say anything, one turned to the tall woman approaching us and said, "Are you Dorothy McGuire," to which the women said, "No! Isn't she dead?" I said, "She has been for some time, but you are very much alive, Miss Burtyn." She smiled and proceeded on her way. Three weeks later, we were seated in the same row at "The Trip to Bountiful." So I can say Ellen and I are theatre buddies.

ABC dropped it, but another studio might pick it up. The shows ratings were too good and as bad as her tweet is it may not kill it. (and to be honest I think political correctness can go too far for tasteless jokes pandering to her base—I do hold the president to a different standard than actors) looks like Kathy griffin is finally going back on stage after a year banishment for her tasteless beheading of pres trump. So Metcalf might not be available, but a new studio might mean new contracts and she could pass.

It's done. No actors would participate. Advertisers wouldn't participate. Unless Roseanne was replaced with Sandy Duncan.

the show would still need advertisers . The current set was calling ABC to threaten departure if the network didn't do something.

For an actor to join any production on Broadway (or off) the actor has to be approved by the Director, the author, and the producer. Can you imagine there is a world in which Joe Mantello, Scott Rudin, and the Albee estate would approve Roseanne Barr appearing in this play? I think not. And - oh yes- the character is rather aristocratic, Roseanne ain't that, and she could never act that.

I don't think anybody for a moment seriously was suggesting Roseanne join this (or any Broadway) production. for one thing, the lines outside the theater would not be ticket buyers.

Another studio might indeed pick it up but a new network would include new contracts and it is doubtful that Metcalf would sign back on. Similarly Sara Gilbert is not going to damage her brand. The show has already lost Wanda Sykes following this morning's tweet. I don't think Whitney Cummings would sign back on either. All of these people will get jobs however. Unfortunately it will be in television not in theater where we could use such bright names. The people I feel sorry for are people like Lecy Gorensen and Michael Fishman and the new writers and cast members who thought they had settled into a nice multi year gig and now find the rug pulled out from underneath them. It is like if all of a sudden Harry Potter announced it was closing at the end of next week. The cast, the crew and all those new enthusiastic staff members at the Lyric would be confused and beside themselves.

It's been hours since ABC's cancellation. Sara Gilbert, ''Roseanne'' exec producer and co-star, condemned Barr's comments as ''abhorrent.'' Wanda Sykes, a consulting producer, tweeted she wouldn't be returning (before ABC made its big announcement). Emma Kenney, who plays Barr's granddaughter on the show, tweeted that she had contacted her manager about quitting the show, only to learn it had already been canceled. And Bruce Helford, ''Roseanne's'' show runner, put out a statement saying he was ''personally horrified and saddened.''

If there's any silver lining, maybe Metcalf's schedule will be clearer whenever she gets to do ''Death of a Salesman'' with Nathan Lane ...

“I'm hideously shy as myself but on stage I can run around naked and bite the heads off fish.”

I've had a hard time finding a more personal statement from Laurie Metcalf online. It is both frustrating and welcome.

Why would it even take 24 hours? If Metcalf and Goodman didn't want to be the first ones to comment, they've already got the ''cover'' of fellow actors and producers from ''Roseanne'' condemning Barr's despicable statements. Of course, they've also got the prerogative of saying nothing and silently supporting Barr, but given how racist Barr's tweets were, it seems so cowardly.

Sadly, it's not even the first bigoted time that Barr called a black woman an ''ape.''

In 2013, she referred to Obama security adviser Susan Rice as ''a man with big, swinging ape balls.''

And then there's her history of calling people ''Nazis,'' dressing up as Hitler and attacking Muslims and trans people, etc.

Why would it even take 24 hours?

I never said it would. But if they're not on social media, it's going to be a statement drawn up by a publicist, which takes longer.

And not for nothing, but Uma Thurman's statement on Weinstein lost none of its power for her waiting until, as she put it, she was "able to take her time" and express her thoughts.

It doesn't take that long to put out a statement through a publicist.

Bruce Helford, ''Roseanne's'' showrunner, put out his statement within about an hour of ABC's cancellation (10:47 a.m.).

Another ''Roseanne'' actor, Michael Fishman, who played D.J., has chimed in and called Barr's comments ''reprehensible and intolerable.''

He added that ''to sit back or distance myself ... would unintentionally endorse or placate those statements which I find truly offensive.”

Like all the supporting players in this new generation of real-life movies-of-the-week, Fishman and many of his co-stars are trying to save their own skin. They knew who they were getting into bed with and hoped that, maybe, she might have changed.

Perhaps Metcalf and Goodman feel no need to exonerate themselves via the public confessional. They are both presumably very wealthy after years of regular series roles plus the myriad amount of one-offs and movies and plays. And maybe they don't feel the need to cry crocodile tears in order for people to understand that they don't share Roseanne Barr's views.

As any relative of an addict knows- and I suspect that Barr is herself an addict of infamy and controversy- you are always giving them the benefit of the doubt and hoping that they had changed their ways. I can only assume that the players involved hoped that Roseanne had changed.

Saying "I find her statements offensive" is not an act of bravery on the level of "I am Spartacus".

To you, maybe. Not to a lot of people. Not to me. I think they are just sad and tired and shocked. And like I said earlier, of a generation that might not think the first thing to do is ring up a publicist and make a statement. I doubt they are trying to spare Roseanne's feelings.

...that the most veteran members of the cast, those that have known their co-star and her temperament as adults for the longest, and who themselves are private, not-given-to-comment people, are taking whatever time they need to say anything. I don't find any fault with the people who have chosen to say their piece / peace. But I cannot imagine what Mr. Goodman and Ms. Metcalf are thinking and what is driving their choices. And whatever I could imagine would likely be wide off from the truth. I wish them all peace and future success.

Goodman said today that he is not going to say anything about it. (a reporter stopped him on the street).

I'd guess Metcalf will do the same. She has always been a little press shy. There was talk that it hurt her Oscar chances this year since Allison Janney was out doing all sorts of events and gatherings and Metcalf didn't.
