Escape to Margaritaville -- Joe and Mika last night
Posted by: BroadwayTonyJ 08:36 am EDT 05/31/18

Joe and Mika just reported that they attended Margaritaville last night. Joe commented that it was a great show -- no mention that the production had just announced its premature closing. That's a far cry from Mika grilling the Spiderman producers back in 2011 when they came on the morning show to discuss Julie Taymor's departure, the re-tooling of the show, and the new opening date of 6/14/11. Mika (as I recall) insisted they address the issue of whether the show's ongoing turmoil would affect its ultimate commercial viability. Reminds me of Willie Geist (back in 2014) introducing cast members from Hollar If Ya Hear Hear Me as the stars of the hottest show on Broadway just a week before it too was forced to close.

The network morning news shows are more frequent promoters of Broadway shows and news. The cable news programs rarely mention theater. That is rather sad since their programs usually consist of constant repetition of the tweets of # 45 or confusing statements from his attorneys or sometimes ambien fueled rants of now former sitcom stars in racially charged meltdowns. Such an event as the opening of an all gay (seminal according to Jesse on this board) production of "The Boys in the Band" on the eve of Gay Pride month would seem to be made for a segment on one of these shows but it hasn't happened yet. Perhaps later in June if the political theater slows down.

The Morning Joe talk show on MSNBC has been theatre-friendly for several years. Frequently actors, producers, and others from current Broadway shows will drop by to chat and promote their show. Mika, Joe, Willie, and others from the show will occasionally mention it whenever they have gone to a Broadway show the previous day.

My apologies to Morning Joe then. I have never seen any Broadway actor on it, only constant and incessant talk about our current President and other politicians.

I don't think that they actually schedule Broadway people as guests. I get the impression that they just stop by. Also, it's only occasionally -- not on a regular basis. I've been watching the show 5 days a week for years so I've noticed whenever there is someone from Broadway on it. Mika is pretty theatre savvy and sees a fair amount of plays and musicals. One of Joe's sons did some acting in high school and college and began taking Joe to the theatre. Before that happened, Joe had not been much of a theatre enthusiast. Jordan Roth stops by more frequently than anyone else. I've seen Al Pacino, Tom Hanks, Nathan Lane, James Corden, Sally Field, and many other stage people drop by. However, the show is primarily a political and current events talk show -- it runs 3 hours in the morning.

Chris Mathews used to have a Sunday morning talk show that occasionally discussed theatre. Andrew Sullivan was one of the regular commentators on the show and was really into theatre. Chris Hayes is good friends with Lin-Manuel Miranda -- they may have gone to school together so Lin has been on his nightly talk show several times.

Wait, let me get this straight. You don't think any of these appearances are planned? There are no publicists involved, no scheduling with the broadcast? People like Sally Field just stop by and get on TV? Is that how it happens, do you think?

Yes, that is my impression. There is no performance. It's a news and talk show. I have never known them to publicize in advance that a Broadway celebrity is dropping by on any given day. It's not like the Tonight Show or Colbert. The celebrity just shows up, chats for a bit, plugs his/her show, and that's it. Someone like Tom Hanks (who apparently is a good friend) may well hang around for more than a few minutes. It wouldn't surprise me if Jim Parsons just shows up soon to show everyone his boot and cane. It's always pretty casual. Of course, maybe it's all planned and they make it look spontaneous (but I don't think it is).

I've been posting about Morning Joe here for years. I just assumed there were a bunch of people on ATC who watched the show.

Correction: "publicize in advance" should read "announce in advance" nmi

None of what you say means publicists aren't involved.

I just checked all my posts in this thread -- I don't say anything about publicists, which is something I know nothing about. The show itself does not announce in advance that a given celebrity will be making an appearance on a given day. I doubt if anything involving a celebrity is actually live. I do think that when we see a sequence with a celebrity, it was taped that morning, which gives the impression that they just dropped by. Of course, I'm just guessing about all of this -- I have no idea how they actually put together their show. Some news segments are repeated throughout the 3 hours so they have obviously been taped. The celebrity sequences are only shown once.

It's in the post you replied to and they are part of the planning, even if the appearances aren't announced ahead of time.

I don't exactly understand what you are saying. I corrected the wording in my earlier post. Is that your objection? I'm kind of puzzled by your posts.

I'm just agreeing with writerkev, at least how I read his post. I don't think they're just stopping by on their own.

I replied to writerkev this morning with an example of what I was talking about. Here's another one: Mon. morning, 6/08/09 -- Mika and Joe discuss the previous evening's Tonys, show a clip of Aaron Tveit performing something from Next to Normal (probably "I'm Alive"), praise the show, and lament his not receiving a Tony nomination. Later that week during one of their heated political discussions with other commentators, Joe is tapped on the shoulder by a male figure (unshaven, dressed in sweat pants, sleeves, backwards baseball cap) -- it's Tveit, who looks into the camera, waves, says "thanks, guys for the shout out", and departs. Joe then smiles, looks into the camera, and says "And that, ladies and gentlemen, was Aaron Tveit from Next to Normal". Maybe it was staged, but all 4 commentators looked surprised and then amused.

Again I have no idea of how booking and publicists work, but it seems improbable that MSNBC would send a limo to Queens and chauffer Tveit (dressed like he's heading to softball practice) to the studio for that type of 5-second appearance. Just sayin'.

She seems to be saying someting like what I said. For you to suggest that Sally Field gets herself up in the morning and wanders over to the studio and just pops up on TV is, frankly, the height of naivety. Those appearances are pitched and arranged by publicists after conversations with producers and boomers, then the stars are accompanied (often chauffeured) to the studio. They don’t just pop in.

Here's what I'm talking about: Late spring, 2013 -- Mika, Joe, Willie Geist, and Mike Barnicle are seated around a table, deep in debate about a pressing political issue -- suddenly a guy, unshaven, sloppily dressed (shorts, baseball sleeves, backwards baseball cap), bursts in, grabs a sweet roll, takes a bite out it, proceeds around the table, drawing a mustache on each of their coffee cups with a magic marker, faces the camera -- it's Tom Hanks of course -- and comically shouts: Go see my show Lucky Guy at the Broadhurst Theatre and departs. That's what I mean by "drops by".

Staged? I don't know -- could be. My immediate impression -- spontaneous.

OK, now I get it. I totally misinterpreted your post and answered it without putting any real thought into it. All I'm saying is the celebrity appearances are unannounced, casual, and usually brief -- nothing like what you would see on Fallon or Colbert. There is no performance. Sometimes the guys like Hanks or Tveit actually look kind of grubby. Maybe this is all put-on -- it doesn't seem to be scripted. The last time Hanks was on, he went around putting a mustache on everyone's coffee cup. I do not pretend to know how the show is actually put together -- I was just posting my impressions.
