At MEAN GIRLS last night the role of Damian Hubbard was played by the understudy, ensemble member DeMarius R. Copes. When I noticed it wasn't Grey Henson, I was immediately disappointed that I was missing a Tony nominated performance. Well, after one verse of the opening number I wasn't sorry - I was grateful. A totally different take on the role, it's hard to believe that this actor, a clear triple threat was making his Broadway debut. He's clearly worked very hard. I am very picky about understudies, some of whom have been underwhelming to say the least. I'm happy to report that this is not the case here. Grey Henson, watch your back!
I noticed that the entire ensemble cheered for him in the curtain call and DeMarius was clearly excited too. From what I've seen in the video footage, he was just as good - or better and he should be very proud. I hope the producers took note. BIG congrats! |
