She seems to be saying someting like what I said. For you to suggest that Sally Field gets herself up in the morning and wanders over to the studio and just pops up on TV is, frankly, the height of naivety. Those appearances are pitched and arranged by publicists after conversations with producers and boomers, then the stars are accompanied (often chauffeured) to the studio. They don’t just pop in.

Here's what I'm talking about: Late spring, 2013 -- Mika, Joe, Willie Geist, and Mike Barnicle are seated around a table, deep in debate about a pressing political issue -- suddenly a guy, unshaven, sloppily dressed (shorts, baseball sleeves, backwards baseball cap), bursts in, grabs a sweet roll, takes a bite out it, proceeds around the table, drawing a mustache on each of their coffee cups with a magic marker, faces the camera -- it's Tom Hanks of course -- and comically shouts: Go see my show Lucky Guy at the Broadhurst Theatre and departs. That's what I mean by "drops by".

Staged? I don't know -- could be. My immediate impression -- spontaneous.

(That should have read “bookers,” not “boomers.”)

OK, now I get it. I totally misinterpreted your post and answered it without putting any real thought into it. All I'm saying is the celebrity appearances are unannounced, casual, and usually brief -- nothing like what you would see on Fallon or Colbert. There is no performance. Sometimes the guys like Hanks or Tveit actually look kind of grubby. Maybe this is all put-on -- it doesn't seem to be scripted. The last time Hanks was on, he went around putting a mustache on everyone's coffee cup. I do not pretend to know how the show is actually put together -- I was just posting my impressions.
