BEAST IN THE JUNGLE: BFA Dance concert
Posted by: NewtonUK 07:02 am EDT 06/02/18

Adam Feldman gave the Susan Stroman/John Kander/David Thompson BEAST IN THE JUNGLE a one star review. He was being generous by at least one star - but John Kander is a treasure, and back in the mists of time Stroman did some good work. But Jerry Robbins or Balanchine (or Fosse, or Bennett, or Champion, or DeMille) she is not and never will be.

Here a stage full of Broadway folk and one beautiful Ukrainian ballerina do mostly fakey ballet choreography to unusually doodly music by John Kander. With a nine piece band orchestrated to sound like four.

I know it sounds mean - but this does indeed look like some student's final dance concert project.

And dancer's frequently shouldn't talk/ Tony Yazbek was mesmerizing in ON THE TOWN. But an actor he is not. And our lovely ballerina who we also saw to great effect in GRAND HOTEL - well - she is no actor either.

David Thompson has written some good books for musicals - all the way back to FLORA THE RED MENACE. But here his words are unspeakably hackneyed, the story from Henry James dismal.

One of the most dispiriting evenings of theatre I have had in a long time, because so many terrific artists were involved.

Not really a single moment to take away.
