Audra at NJPAC

Saw the WONDERFUL Audra McDonald in Newark this afternoon and she was glorious! Sang for over 2 hours with no intermission and no sips from water bottles on piano. She had a 3 man band backing her beautifully-she sang everything from Cornet Man to Climb Every Mountain and special tributes to Barbara Cook and Jule Styne. She mentioned it's being a dark time for our world that led into an inspiring Make Someone Happy and ended with Over The Rainbow, telling us all to hold onto our dreams and hopes. The world IS a better place with this genius performer, whose heart is as big as her talent and we all left walking on air and feeling more hopeful! A truly enchanting artist!

It was quite a concert and agree with everything you said. A few particular highlights for me: I've always been blown away by I'll Be There, but perhaps because I was lucky enough to have been in the second row, this time left me shattered. Her ability to take a corny song like Climb Every Mountain and make it feel immediate and urgent is just incredible. And when she stepped away from the mike and sang Summertime...

Her ability to take a corny song like Climb Every Mountain and make it feel immediate and urgent is just incredible.

Her reprise of "Tomorrow" from the TV version of ANNIE is another example of her taking an overly-familiar song and making it fresh.

IMO, a song such as "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" is only corny when it's sung (or received) with that kind of attitude. It may be over-familiar, and like any over-familiar song, it's prone to parody (the Musical Of Musicals take on the song is genius, in that respect), but over-familiar doesn't have to be corny. For my sake, I don't find anything in that song to be corny at all. And likewise, if Audra simply trusted the truth in the lyric, like all singers *should*, that's all it needs to feel immediate and urgent. ;-)

and no sips from water bottles on piano.

Well, gee, good for her. [insert facetious emoticon here.]

Maybe you find the water bottles distracting, and that's fine. But water is important, especially in a long recital. and even in the old days, singers often took the advantage of leaving the stage between numbers or sets to get water. Just that nowadays it's somehow become more permissive to have water out in the open, and I for one don't mind that.

Opera houses even find ways to hide access to water in the productions' sets, for characters that don't leave the stage often. HD audiences got a good glimpse of this when the recent Met production of Elektra was broadcast in theatres a few seasons back - when "straws" were literally built into the side walls of the set so that soprano Nina Stemme could get water when needed. You wouldn't notice this sitting in the house, but the intimacy of the HD cameras picked it up.

So really, do we NEED to complain about singers taking sips of water, no matter how it's done? ;-)

I didn't find the original post to be critical of singers needing water, or water bottles on piano. I read nothing into it except the amazement that Audra sang brilliantly for 2 solid hours without even needing any water.

It IS amazing. I say this with no tude other than it's something I notice. I remember seeing both Bernadette and Streisand in concert and there was a lot of tending to water and hot tea set ups, etc. etc. NOT a problem for me, but it was there to be observed. Then I saw a Celine Dion concert and was just in awe that she sang at the level she does, flawlessly, without taking a sip of water (that I could see). There is probably something physiological at play too. Not every person is known for having "chords of steel", probably because so few do.

I think your key phrase would be "that I could see" lol. But yes, all singers are different, and some singers need to hydrate more than others. No solo singer can have "chords" of any kind, though, steel or not - it takes at least 3 of them to do that - save the Tibetan monks, perhaps. ;-)

That is exactly what I meant! Thank you for pointing that out. How could I express "tude" after raving so about her?

You may be right - but the way it was phrased, I did read some tude in it. I have certainly heard people make disparaging comments about singers/actors being tethered to bottled water these days, lol - so it seemed to me to be something similar. My apologies if it wasn't meant that way.
