With SpongeBob and Ethan Slater taking all of the Best Actor and Best Musical prizes so far (unless I'm mistaken).... how likely do we really think that "Band's Visit" will upset the trend that SpongeBob is been doing?

I am predicting Ethan Slater to win though....

As noted by OldTheaterGuy below, The Band's Visit is not eligible for most of this year's awards. It was eligible last year for everything except the Tonys. If there's anything else it wasn't eligible for last year, I'm not thinking of it.

While the Drama Critics Circle is by no means always a predictor of the Tonys, I think it's worth comparing last year's best musical results with this year's.

Last year, The Band's Visit won best musical with one of the most lopsided victories in the history of the award. It received 16 votes, with the rest of the votes divided among Groundhog Day, which received two votes, and with one vote each going to War Paint, Hadestown, Ride the Cyclone and Bandstand.

This year, the Circle ended up giving no award for best musical. They did a vote for best musical, but when no musical received a majority on the first ballot, it was decided not to proceed to a weighted ballot and to simply give no award. For the record, on the first ballot, the votes were spread thus: Jerry Springer—The Opera (four), KPOP (three), The Boy Who Danced on Air (two), and one each for Bella: An American Tall Tale, Mean Girls, Miss You Like Hell, Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story and SpongeBob SquarePants, and there were three abstentions.

"The Band's Visit", WHEN it wins, will NOT be an upset.

All of this optimistic-to-delusional talk of other shows winning cracks me up. I keep reading posts and in some cases articles saying things like "Well now that Mean Girls is a hit, hasn't The Band's Visit actually moved into the dark-horse spot?" and some such. (And for the record, if by some freak occurrence The Band's Visit were to not win, it wouldn't lose the award to SpongeBob but to Mean Girls).

The Band's Visit is the surest Best Musical winner of the last decade aside from Hamilton. On the awards prediction site Gold Derby, Every. Single. One. of their forecasters and prognosticators has picked it to win, and they put its odds of winning at 1/20. (Their second-place pick, Mean Girls, factors in at odds of 40-to-1.)

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Ethan Slater does pull off the Best Actor -
He wouldn't be my choice (he'd be my 3rd, after Hadden-Paton and Shalhoub), but this year that feels like a category where anything could happen.

I think The Band's Visit will win best musical and it deserves it. Ethan Slater seems to be predicted to win best actor in a musical but I would vote for Harry Hadden-Paton. I think because he isn't known in the theater community here he has the least possibility of winning. But I was so impressed by his performance, more than Lauren Ambrose.

Until he did ''SpongeBob SquarePants,'' Ethan Slater wasn't ''known in the theater community,'' either.

But both he and Hadden-Paton are making their Broadway debuts and receiving Theatre World Awards tonight (June 4) for it.

So far, Slater has won the Outer Critics and Drama Desk, and I think it's because, as the title character, he's so much the engine behind his show.

I guess I feel the theater community is rooting for him because he's American and has their support. I also got the impression that people have been talking about Slater since the show tried out in Chicago whereas there has been less hype about Haddon-Paton.

If Slater should win, I doubt it has anything to do with him being American (any more than Glenda Jackson's likely to win for being British).

Besides, Shalhoub's American, too, and he's far better-known than Slater: He's a 3-time Emmy winner and 4-time Tony nominee.

Joshua Henry also identifies as American. Though this 3-time Tony nominee was born in Manitoba, he was raised in Florida and lives in Harlem.

I’m surprised Shalhoub isn’t on the short list

It’s a pitch perfect performance. Slater is cute and energetic, but Shalhoub gives the memorable performances

I've been trying to figure out Slater's seemingly frontrunner status and as WaymanWong has pointed out, I haven't succeeded. I thought Slater was charming but I didn't leave the theater thinking about his performance. But there seems to be great affection for his work and the show itself has an underdog appeal.

Shalhoub is excellent in The Band's Visit but he does blend into the ensemble and he doesn't sing much.

Maybe this category is closer than it appears since Tony voters aren't the same as the Drama Desk or Outer Critics voters.

The list of nominees is the short list, isn't it?

If Tony Shalhoub wins Best Actor, it'll because enough Tony voters love ''Band's Visit'' and feel he's overdue to win (on his 4th Tony nomination).

However, even Shalhoub has commented on how little he sings in it, and he's been gone from the show for a couple of months, shooting a TV series. He came back for only ''select'' performances in May for the Tony voters, and now he's ended his run in it. Even when ''Band's Visit'' was awards-eligible last season, Shalhoub didn't get nominated for Best Actor in a Musical by the Drama Desk or Lortel Awards. Fine as he is, it's not a performance that has won other prizes or generated tons of buzz.

How short is he?

haha. But you should speak about his performance in the past tense, right? Yes, boo-hoo for me on my revisit, but I agree his performance was memorable. As is the whole show. I'm very happy that it's done well in the transfer.

Just for the record, Shalhoub is 5-foot-10. ;)

Slater says he's ''a tick under 5-foot-7,'' but he looks even a mite shorter than that.

Don’t forget: most of awards so far given out cover both Broadway and off-Broadway, so Band’s Visit was eligible last year and not in competition with Spongebob.
