The Great Leap

As a Chinese American theater goer who has attended plays and musicals for many years, I rarely get to see plays about Chinese Americans or Chinese characters that I like. There just aren't many to choose from. I didn't know the work of Lauren Yee and knew nothing about The Great Leap. This is a fine play and an engaging one. It gives BD Wong a very strong part, too. Though I guessed some of what was going to be revealed, I was very surprised by the end. Highly recommended.

The play has a relentless speed that covers for its relative lack of drama, and I'm sure Taibi is giving it a crackerjack production, so I'm glad to hear that it's a worthwhile evening.

Still, I question whether that overpowers the fact that Lauren doesn't know very much about China. I wanted to like the play on the page, but I couldn't get past its wildly inaccurate and inauthentic vision of that country and its people, particularly in that time period.
