(Sunday, June 3, 2018) - Winners for the 63rd Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced this evening at The Town Hall.

The 2018 Drama Desk Awards were streamed live on www.TheaterMania.com. The full list of winners is available at the website www.DramaDeskAwards.com, and below.

In keeping with Drama Desk's mission, nominators considered shows that opened on Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway during the 2017-2018 New York theater season in the same competitive categories.

For the seventh consecutive year, TheaterMania presented the awards ceremony and Joey Parnes Productions produced and managed the show. Gretchen Shugart is Managing Executive Producer of the Drama Desk Awards. The Awards show was written by Bill Rosenfield (46 Beacon, True Fans, Sunshine and Shadow), and directed by Mark Waldrop (Not That Jewish, Howard Crabtree's When Pigs Fly, Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends).

About The Drama Desk
The Drama Desk was founded in 1949 to explore key issues in the theater and to bring together critics and writers in an organization to support the ongoing development of theater in New York. The organization began presenting its awards in 1955, and it is the only critics' organization to honor achievement in the theater with competition among Broadway, Off Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway productions in the same categories.

The 2017-2018 Drama Desk Nominating Committee is composed of: David Barbour, (Lighting&Sound America - Committee Chair), Linda Buchwald (freelance: Theatre is Easy, Playbill, American Theatre, TDF Stages), Peter Filichia (Broadway Select; Broadway Radio; author, most recently, Strippers, Showgirls, and Sharks - St. Martin's Press), Helen Shaw (Time Out NY; Village Voice), Martha Wade Steketee (freelance; The Clyde Fitch Report, TDF Stages, HowlRound), Zachary Stewart (TheaterMania.com), Doug Strassler (Garden State Journal; Center on the Aisle; Back on the Block; TDF Stages), Charles Wright (Drama Desk President), ex officio.

I liked a lot of the winners especially music and lyrics for Desperate Measures. But how did Admissions win Best Play? I thought it was the weakest one nominated.

Mueller's win is no surprise. History shows that the overwhelmingly number of Drama Desk winners come from Broadway shows.

I doubt that enough of the DD voters saw Park in ''KPOP'' or Jimenez or Rubin-Vega in ''Miss You Like Hell,'' both limited Off-Broadway runs.

Even if the Public got enough DD voters in to ''Miss You Like Hell,'' Jimenez and Rubin-Vega could've split some votes.

So it was between the two Broadway contenders: Mueller and LaChanze. ''Carousel'' had 12 DD nominations; ''Summer,'' only 1.

''Carousel'' was better reviewed than ''Summer'' and had more nominations, so Mueller benefited.

It would've been a different race if the 8 Drama Desk nominators also nominated Ambrose and Kilgore (both Tony nominees), but that's showbiz.

The Tony race will be more competitive with 6 nominees, but it looks like it'll be a showdown between Lenk and Ambrose.

I was also surprised by Mueller's win since I thought in nominating LaChanze as sole nominee from "Summer" she might have been thought of as standing above that show and as something special (I haven't seen the show.) I agree that Kilgore should have been nominated and I am puzzed as to why she was not except for the fact that it is the Drama Desk. I am still puzzled as to why Ethan Slater was not nominated by the Drama League, not that he would have presented any competition to Glenda Jackson but with over 50 persons nominated, you would think one of the leading contenders for Tony Best Musical actor might have been recognized. As to the Tony Awards, I think that "The Bands Visit" has sort of a lock on Best Musical, Best Actress and Best Musical Score. I think most of the other awards are either going to other shows (Tina Fey should start preparing an acceptance speech for book of a musical e.g.) or are up for grabs. I hope you are going to be at the party Saturday. I look forward to meeting you.
