Her ability to take a corny song like Climb Every Mountain and make it feel immediate and urgent is just incredible.
IMO, a song such as "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" is only corny when it's sung (or received) with that kind of attitude. It may be over-familiar, and like any over-familiar song, it's prone to parody (the Musical Of Musicals take on the song is genius, in that respect), but over-familiar doesn't have to be corny. For my sake, I don't find anything in that song to be corny at all. And likewise, if Audra simply trusted the truth in the lyric, like all singers *should*, that's all it needs to feel immediate and urgent. ;-) |
