She was an extraordinary singer, but didn't develop much reputation as an actor. Sometimes, those big-voiced performers are pigeonholed. She found the perfect showcase in "Cats," and many say her Grizabella was definitive. No small thing, but other, longer, more complicated roles eluded her. I have her CD, and listening to it now, it's sometimes hard to find the person behind the glorious voice. It happens, and the business is known for viewing artists in niche ways.

There are numerous videos of her Grizabella on YouTUbe. I've linked one of them.

Although I never was able to see her live, I do think I hear so much personality and acting in her voice alone. She will always be my favorite Narrator in Joseph, for instance - to me she really owns that role, and imbues it with a certain sense of playful abandon that I've never quite heard anyone else do.

She was the definitive Narrator. I saw her return to the role in the late '80's at the Walnut in Philadelphia opposite Sal Viviano as Joseph and I could not keep my eyes off her, which is really saying something since the production had the entire male cast of the show changing clothes right on stage from scene to scene...little proto-gay me should have been entirely focused there, but Beechman was fantastic and really had that star quality that made you know that, title of the show aside, SHE was the star.

I believe she was from the Philadelphia area and appeared there from time to time for a home town visit. I also saw in there as Fantine in the LES MISERABLES tour that played the Forrest Theatre, the very first time I saw that show. I'm unclear on whether or not she was otherwise in the tour or if she was just doing the Philadelphia engagement. I'm pretty sure this would have been around the time she was starting to get sick. Again, she was heart-breaking and that's BEFORE anyone in the public really knew that she was sick.

Agreed - I love listening to her on the JOSEPH album. And I saw her as Fantine in LES MIZ; it's not my favorite show, but she was quite good.

her Annie fame was more in retrospect. After she did other things people went back and realized that was the woman who had that one standout moment on the OBC of Annie with the Star to be. (I guess two moments if you count that Who knew I could steal?!!!!!

Not sure how much star to be stands out in the show. I don't really remember her making as big of an impact as she does on the record. Seth is probably right above. She may have been pursuing a recording career. She is also in the movie Hair around this time where she sings Black Boys with Ellen Foley (another Broadway/rock singer)
