I’m surprised Shalhoub isn’t on the short list

It’s a pitch perfect performance. Slater is cute and energetic, but Shalhoub gives the memorable performances

I've been trying to figure out Slater's seemingly frontrunner status and as WaymanWong has pointed out, I haven't succeeded. I thought Slater was charming but I didn't leave the theater thinking about his performance. But there seems to be great affection for his work and the show itself has an underdog appeal.

Shalhoub is excellent in The Band's Visit but he does blend into the ensemble and he doesn't sing much.

Maybe this category is closer than it appears since Tony voters aren't the same as the Drama Desk or Outer Critics voters.

The list of nominees is the short list, isn't it?

If Tony Shalhoub wins Best Actor, it'll because enough Tony voters love ''Band's Visit'' and feel he's overdue to win (on his 4th Tony nomination).

However, even Shalhoub has commented on how little he sings in it, and he's been gone from the show for a couple of months, shooting a TV series. He came back for only ''select'' performances in May for the Tony voters, and now he's ended his run in it. Even when ''Band's Visit'' was awards-eligible last season, Shalhoub didn't get nominated for Best Actor in a Musical by the Drama Desk or Lortel Awards. Fine as he is, it's not a performance that has won other prizes or generated tons of buzz.

How short is he?

haha. But you should speak about his performance in the past tense, right? Yes, boo-hoo for me on my revisit, but I agree his performance was memorable. As is the whole show. I'm very happy that it's done well in the transfer.

Just for the record, Shalhoub is 5-foot-10. ;)

Slater says he's ''a tick under 5-foot-7,'' but he looks even a mite shorter than that.
