I've been trying to figure out Slater's seemingly frontrunner status and as WaymanWong has pointed out, I haven't succeeded. I thought Slater was charming but I didn't leave the theater thinking about his performance. But there seems to be great affection for his work and the show itself has an underdog appeal.
Shalhoub is excellent in The Band's Visit but he does blend into the ensemble and he doesn't sing much.
Maybe this category is closer than it appears since Tony voters aren't the same as the Drama Desk or Outer Critics voters. |
