The play has a relentless speed that covers for its relative lack of drama, and I'm sure Taibi is giving it a crackerjack production, so I'm glad to hear that it's a worthwhile evening.
Still, I question whether that overpowers the fact that Lauren doesn't know very much about China. I wanted to like the play on the page, but I couldn't get past its wildly inaccurate and inauthentic vision of that country and its people, particularly in that time period. |
