There have been several other years where the winner didn't exactly face powerful opposition, but this is, of course, very subjective. But here are a few examples;

2000 in which Contact beat Swing, James Joyce's The Dead and The Wild Party

2003 in which Hairspray beat Amour, A Year With Frog and Toad and Movin' Out

2008 in which In The Heights beat Cry-Baby, Xanadu and Passing Strange

And going back a bit further:

1996 in which Rent beat Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk, Chronical of a Death Foretold and Swinging on a Star;

1997 in which Titanic beat The Life, Juan Darien and Steel Pier and

1986 in which The Mystery of Edwin Drood beat Big Deal, Song and Dance and Tango Argentino.

No one need yell at me to tell me that some of the above "losers" were good shows, but most certainly aren't household names. All I'm saying is that not every year is 1960 or 1964.
