I saw in previews, and Mr. Newell's performance was spectacular. More than anything, it felt truly spontaneous, as if he was allowing himself to make new choices with each performance based on what the other performers were handing him. It felt super Meisner, if you will.
I have a feeling last night's growls were just part of the extra energy of the Tonys. He probably isn't doing that 8 times a week.
Either way, I do think ONCE ON THIS ISLAND's performers were overlooked; Kenita Miller also gave a stunning performance.
