| I probably wasn't clear. What I meant was that, if the reason that the number from SUMMER was included on the broadcast was to collect the fee from its producers for this "advertisement" of their show, the producers of SUMMER should have been invited to actually make a television commercial for their show and buy ad space during the broadcast to air it, rather than taking up valuable time on the broadcast that would have been better used in other ways. Perhaps they did that also, but I wasn't paying close attention to the commercials this year. If the producers wanted to buy "advertorial" time on television, they might also have sponsored one of those gala opening night specials that some musicals used to do in the '90's on local NYC television stations. The greater point is that every minute of the broadcast is precious and, in a situation where we have actual awards being presented off-camera and winners being cut off by the orchestra, wasting time on anything non-essential (including a show that wasn't nominated) is to the detriment of the whole broadcast. For example, I get why Springsteen's number was there...he's a huge potential draw for viewers, even if whatever it was that he was doing was ponderous at best and boring at worst. I would probably have gone with a clip package of B-roll from the production coupled with him giving his speech after picking up his award. I would also have cut Rachel Bloom's outros and probably, as nice as it was, the performance from the Parkland drama club, which was terrific, but had nothing at all to do with this season on Broadway. The extraneous stuff can happen in seasons that are light on musicals and require some more entertainment to break up the awards and speeches. |
