TONYS--disturbing in some ways

I watched the Tony show last night, even though I had only seen one show (THE BAND’S VISIT). I found it disturbing on several levels. First of all, I hated that “Tony dreaming” business of showing high school photos of all the presenters. Then on top of that, the high school students’ performance topped most of the other musical performances on the show. Then they give a Tony to a teacher and announce high school scholarships for musical theatre. They blurred the line between high school and Broadway. It gives the impression that any high school student is ready for Broadway given the opportunity. Too bad they didn’t let Chita talk. She had years of training, was in two big hits early in her career and then had a fifteen-year dry spell of flop after flop until CHICAGO, followed by another long period of flops until SPIDER WOMAN. She’s had nothing but flops since then. She’s had very few work weeks over her decades long career. THAT’S professionalism. I’ve heard that she still does a barre every day. She wasn’t just a high school student who got a lucky throw of the dice and lived happily ever after. The performing arts is an overcrowded profession and it’s tough to make a living, I don’t care who you are. Most of the people with MFAs in acting from Yale can’t even get jobs on Broadway.

I was grateful that the political statements were subtle for the most part. I was offended by DeNiro. That was not a good way to introduce Bruce Springsteen. If I had been Springsteen I’d want to kill DeNiro. I thought the Tonys on TV were a way to get attention for Broadway theatre and encourage people to come to New York on their vacations and see live Broadway shows. IF that’s the case, the Tonys is not the place for inflammatory political statements or for the F word. I’m sure a lot of people decided NOT to come to Broadway because of it, which is too bad. Up until that moment I found it far more entertaining than previous years. I loved Groban and Bareilles. Bring ‘em back again next year. But next year, let’s have a little more class and remember why we’re here. The only agenda on Tony night should be to promote Broadway theatre.
