Chita also did TV and regionals when she wasn't on Broadway, so while she was sometimes out of work, I don't think it's quite as long as you say.

If the Tonys wanted to show people in theater schools or high schools about professional actors/singer/dancers, they might want to take some documentary footage of the Equity audition center / Ripley-Greer, etc. to show an Equity call vs. an open call; they could show an agent's office and/or casting office with desks and files piled with pictures/resumes. But of course, reality isn't particularly glamorous. Schools are in business -- and discouraging people by focusing on difficulties and the competition is not necessarily done too often. The performers who stick it out, with talent, training and persistence especially have a better chance of it, unless in additions to those traits you're lucky and/or have great connections early on. It's easier to focus on dreams and hopes (not that those aren't valid, too.) Ms. Rivera is one who found some measure of fame early on, but who loved the work and kept up and survived. Numerous kids and adults on social media nowadays have these outlets to promote themselves, though they can become quite narcissistic, and they don't necessarily result in paid work.

Robert De Niro's words and actions reflect mainly on himself. Glenda Jackson, while not making such blatant attempt for attention, was classier and made her point quite effectively. I saw David Yazbek's remarks linked in a later thread, and he made a point about his show's themes of love and understanding being needed in these times of perpetual lies and other misdeeds without mentioning names. But he's a very astute writer, not an Oscar-winning actor taking the stage like a brutish Neanderthal.
