| Regarding musicals, in 1947 there was a category Outstanding Score awarded to Kurt Weill for Street Scene, but no additional category for the best musical. In 1948 there was no category for either the best score or the best musical. From 1949 through 1970 the wording for the Best Musical Tony cited the composer, lyricist, librettist, and producer. Curiously the title of the category varied from year to year as one of the following: Outstanding Musical, Musical Play, Musical, Best Broadway Musical, Best Musical. In some of those years there were also categories for the best score and the best book. Apparently artists like Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, Josh Logan, Burt Shevelove, Larry Gelbart, Jerry Herman, Michael Stewart, Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, Joseph Stein, Mitch Leigh, Joe Darion, John Kander, Fred Ebb, Jule Styne, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green may well have taken home 2 Tonys for essentially the same thing in those particular years. Regarding plays, in 1947 there was a category Outstanding Playwright awarded to Arthur Miller for All My Sons. I guess Harold Clurman, Elia Kazan, and Walter Fried got stiffed -- although Kazan did win Oustanding Director for Sons. In 1948 the category was Outstanding Play and was awarded to Thomas Heggen and Joshua Logan. Leland Hayward apparently did not receive an award. However, beginning in 1949 and continuing to this day, the best play category cited both the playwright and the producer. |
