"To say that Chita Rivera “has only had a few weeks of work” in her entire career?"
Ridiculous. The woman worked all the time when she wasn't appearing on Broadway. As I once wrote on this board, not long after I saw her in BAJOUR she and James Mitchell starred in a production of THE THREEPENNY OPERA that played the Mineola Playhouse. I believe she did a tab version of SWEET CHARITY in Vegas not long after the Broadway production closed (I know Helen Gallagher was in it). In the seventies, I saw her cabaret act at least two different times at the Studio Backlot in Los Angeles. Once she was able to appear there due to Fosse's heart attack and rescheduling rehearsals for CHICAGO. Instead of waiting around and waiting she was back doing the cabaret circuit (got to hear for the first time "All That Jazz" and "How Lucky Can You Get" from the soon to be released horrific FUNNY LADY which brought down the house. And I would imagine she took her act to other cities too. In the eighties, I saw her in CAN CAN with the Radio City Rockettes at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. She was also in a touring production of ZORBA I saw at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. And I believe she also did a show there titled ZENDA with Alfred Drake after she left BYE BYE BIRDIE and again a show in the late sixties titled 1491 with John Cullum which was to be Meredith Wilson's final score and closed in San Francisco. So even if she had numerous flops out of town and some on Broadway, she was seldom idle. I'm not aware of her summer stock credits but wouldn't be surprised if she did shows like SWEET CHARITY, ZORBA and IRMA LA DOUCE around the country. |
