There are loopholes in Tony voting, but the League & Theatre Wing don't seem to care

At Forbes.com, Marc Herschberg reports about the ''flawed'' voting system for the Tonys.

Hershberg quotes a company manager who says, ''I never worked on a show where more than 60% of the voters requested their [Tony] tickets.'' Comparing numbers with his colleagues, he found that the voter turnout at other nominated shows ranged from 35% to 80%.

Sadly, this is nothing new. Years ago, Jeremy Gerard reported roughly the same statistics, and how the League and Wing look the other way.

Hershberg adds: ''In an effort to ensure informed voting, the official rulebook requires each voter to abstain from casting their votes in categories in which they have not seen all of the nominated contestants. Someone cannot choose 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' as the Best Play, for example, when he or she missed 'The Children' or 'Junk.'''

And if you believe that, I'd like to sell you a bridge in Brooklyn. … That admonition is nothing new. I saw it on the Tony ballot many years ago. Back then, at the N.Y. Daily News, I worked with an editor who was a Tony voter. This editor was too busy to attend shows throughout the year, but made a furious effort to binge on Broadway nominees in May. This editor also asked for my opinions to help fill out the ballot. (Ironically, even though I saw everything, I couldn't become a Tony voter because the News already had its share of Tony voters.)

Anyway, the Forbes story says the Tonys finally will bring their balloting online. I'm no computer whiz, but couldn't the League and the Wing coordinate with the shows' publicists (who know who has and hasn't picked up their comps)? Their attendance could be recorded with a special card. When it came time to vote, the online system would only allow them to vote in the categories where they HAD seen all the nominees.

Of course, no system is perfect or foolproof. But it's gotta be better than the honor system that isn't so honorably obeyed.
