| They blurred the line between high school and Broadway. It gives the impression that any high school student is ready for Broadway given the opportunity. No, they didn't, and no, it doesn't. Speaking as someone who currently works in a college musical theatre program, who has done lots of work with high school performers in the past, and who, through it all, maintains work in professional regional theatre as well, I was heartened by the focus on young performers - those who are young now, and those who got their start in school theatre when they were younger. Arts education is ALWAYS something we need more of. Certainly the Tonys were preaching to the choir, so to speak, but it was the perfect event to honor educational theatre and to hopefully encourage any young performers watching that someday they could end up doing it professionally. That's obviously no guarantee, but obviously neither do you get it if you don't strive for it. That's not false hope, nor is it blurring the line. I wouldn't be a musical theatre professional and teacher now if I hadn't been encouraged and supported in my interest when I was a kid. The only agenda on Tony night should be to promote Broadway theatre. No. The agenda on Tony night should be to promote theatre, period. The FOCUS of the evening is obviously on the awards and the shows nominated for said awards. But that doesn't mean that the evening can't also embrace other aspects of theatre, if even briefly. Anyone involved in those Broadway shows that you covet so damned exclusively would tell you that they didn't just wake up and find themselves in a Broadway show. And I'm sure they all have stories about their school drama programs or youth theatres in their city or community productions or regional productions that gave them their start and helped nurture them. It's about time that the Tonys gave a nod to some of that. It's truly a shame that you don't get it. If I had been Springsteen I’d want to kill DeNiro. And statements like that are deeply, deeply disturbing in ALL ways. What are you talking about? You claimed the Parkland students performed the best last night, and yet you talk about wanting to kill someone? How ugly and inhumane can you get? |
