Actually, they took the train to Zadar (now Croatia), which was the Captain's birthplace when it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the war, part of the Empire's lands in that region formed Yugoslavia, part, including Zadar, went to Italy.
After the loss of all their sea coasts, it was kind of difficult for Austria to maintain a Navy--von Trapp commanded a U-boat (submarine) in the war. His wartime memoirs are well-written and fascinating. If you saw Das Boot and thought sub crews had it bad in the Second World War....these guys had it so much worse.
