| As a public service to the 23% of Americans who voted for Trump (giving him a win in the Electoral College that placed him in the bottom 20% of Presidents) who weren’t frightened off that angry man using a vulgarity that’s heard in pretty much every film he’s ever been in, here’s some suggestions for shows from this season that might fit in with you world view. Let’s start with a play that actually opened a few weeks too late to be eligible for the Tonys but was represented on stage by four of its cast members. You probably recognized some of them from tv and the movies. The play about a closet-case Republican who gets drunk when he accidentally attends a party for six gay men all played by out actors. No? How about the one featuring Sheldon’s “mommy” and the Best Actress, a former far left wing member of Parliament who delighted in giving hell to the sweetie Maggie Thatcher. It’s all about the prejudices and hypocrasy of the 1%. Oh well, moving on. You could go to the winner of Best Play Revival. True, it’s about a bunch of those annoying politicized gay boys and kind of makes fun of religion and is written by a homosexual Jew, but one of the characters is based on Trump’s mentor, that illustrious... um...heroic... um criminal closet case and he is played by that openly gay actor who’s good friends with Rosie O’Donnell. Maybe we should try a musical. If you don’t mind the composer in his off-air acceptance speech repeatedly calling Trump a liar and urging everyone to vote him out of office, you could see the current Best Musical, a tender tale of peaceful co-existence between Israelis and Arabs without any war and featuring a wonderful performance by the son of Arabic immigrants. Or there’s the Best Musical Revival set on a hurricane ravaged Caribbean island (you could always bring rolls of paper towels and throw them at the actors) though [spoil alert] the lovely young heroine does die from racial intolerance and segregation and the religion celebrated isn’t exactly Christian. But of course there’s the charming musical set under the sea where the cute little characters homes are threatened by off-shore drilling. Or the high school one featuring a villainess who resembled a post-op Ivanka, a cruel and cunning power queen. Oh dear, maybe you should just stay home and listen to Pat Boone sing while bathing in his walk in tub. He voted for Trump. |
