isn't the "Persian rug" line in the film
along with Christopher Plummer ripping the provided Nazi flag - maybe I am misremembering
the whole appropriation of the von Trapps for SoM makes me wonder what it's like to see a film "suggested by" your life. and then impact audiences so strongly for years to come.
I read where the family was most incredulous re the role of Liesl and that the oldest son, in medical school at the time of the events,
would curtsy when introduced and state, "I'm Liesl."
there's a scene in Maria v T's memoirs that presents the family having a Mardi Gras at their home.
Maria does not recognize recognize her husband costumed as a riff-raff sailor. that would have made a nice scene somewhere
It seems the librettists tried to capture the themes of the family's experience if not the facts.
for example, how do you display the (insidious) spread of Nazism: Liesl and Rolf exemplify this nicely.
(altho, I think they are an odd secondary couple in the R&H canon-split by political differences, not death).
and while Maria did not climb literal mountains in escape, she certainly walked them regularly in Vermont
