I saw Richard Chamberlain, who was very good, with just the right manner for the part. He did mainly do the talk singing thing. The real revelation of that production, which I loved, was Melissa Errico as Eliza. She was, I think, recently out of school and had played Cosette on one of the Les Miz tours and had recently made a big splash at Encores! in ONE TOUCH OF VENUS. I didn't live in the city then and hadn't caught VENUS, but was entranced with this Eliza. I still remember the pure joy radiating from her during "I Could Have Danced All Night."
