| I happened to step out when Carousel performed on the Tonys. I can't believe that was the number they wanted to use to showcase this musical. I mean, I get it in theory -- lots of bodies on stage vs something more intimate, a showcase for the hot choreographer's work. But, in reality, it just looked like dance for dance's sake -- and as far as R&H classics go, that is a throwaway song. You have one of R&H's richest, most emotional scores and that's the number they think is going to sell tickets? Not Renee (and company) doing You'll Never Walk Alone, not Jesse and Joshua doing If I Loved You? Or, frankly, if they wanted a group number, what about June Is Bustin Out? I mean, it IS June. | |
