| First off, my list of Tony best musical winners is complete. (I still have a few plays) I missed this show on broadway since I don’t care for revues and I had only been going to theater for about a decade and had only seen king and i with yul Brynner at that point. Surprisingly, after 2000 shows, I still haven’t seen a few of these. As for this production at MUNY, its top notch. 50 dancers go through the numbers effortlessly. It opens with the rousing in the town and then goes to the really fun and original Charleston dance of billion dollar baby (still haven’t seen). Really loved that number. After I still get jealous ( to slow things down) we have the West side story suite of dances. The second act opens with one of my favorites small house of uncle Thomas from king and I. Did the recent lct revival shorten this? The way Bartlett staged it I had the king blocking some If my view from D300s seat. This production was the full version I remember from yul Brynner production. Next we’re Peter Pan and mr monotony (I think I’ve seen a ballet troup do the dance number before). My mom (still alive at 93) always loved high button shoes and the dance number. Wow, the on a Sunday by the sea is mad caper number with everyone running after everyone in and out of a dozen doors. Really well choreographed to a frenzy. I can see why my mom still remembers it after 70 years. fiddler finished the program with an on the town finale with all costume numbers represented. I’m surprised that Jason Alexander won the tony since the narrator has little to do except tevye and high button shoes—it was a weak year for musicals. What a rare opportunity to see a top notch production with 50 actors, beautiful costumes and a huge stage. I wish I could see it again. |
