My grandmother bought me the OBC LP in '56. I played it so often that I eventually wore it out. My mother got me the '64 film soundtrack LP as a replacement, but I never liked it very much. When I decided to get another recording, I had to settle for the '59 OLC LP because by that time the OBC album was out of print. I did like the fact that the London version was in stereo (unlike the Broadway one).
When the CD era dawned, I bought both the OBC and OLC recordings plus Jay's studio cast (great sound and more complete but I rarely listen to it), the 2001 London (I don't like it and may never listen to it again), and the '76 Broadway revival cast CD (my second favorite after the '56 -- I love Andreas and Rose). I'm seeing the current revival on June 26 -- if I like the production, I'll probably get the CD. I think Show Boat is the only other musical of which I have that many recordings. |
