| I have not seen the production, therefore can not comment other than the recording, which I listened to on Amazon Music service. My Fair Lady, more than any other classic musical has needed a decent recording to serve as a back up to the original Broadway Cast which has proven to remain the gold standard, with the London Stereo version right behind it. The only recording that comes close to offering a decent alternative (IMHO) is the 20th anniversary revival with Christine Andreas. Jay's complete version offers a tepid Eliza from Tinuke Olafimiham and Kiri Te Kanawa is all wrong stylistically. Recordings actual represent the musical itself which proves very difficult to cast effectively, in the part of Eliza. This revival has solved that problem, Lauren Ambrose sings far better than any of her competition other than Julie Andrews. The rest of the cast don't excite in the way I would like them to, but this is at least a decent cast album of this cherish-able score where one was lacking. Think of other classic shows with 3 and 4 really fine cast album versions. |
